The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a online (contactless) passport application system in Europe, marking a significant advancement in how passports are managed for Nigerians living abroad.
The system aims to simplify the process of renewing passports for Nigerians in the diaspora, allowing them to apply for or renew their passports online without the need to visit a passport office for biometric enrollment.
Describing the innovation, NIS said on its website: “The introduction of a contactless passport application process for Nigerians marks a significant step towards efficient, secure, and convenient travel document management. This streamlined system allows applicants to submit passport applications digitally, eliminating the need for physical interactions. Leveraging advanced technologies, the contactless process ensures secure data handling, quick verification, and smooth processing, making it easier for citizens to apply from anywhere with internet access.”
Below is the full details of the online passport application;
Applicability: It’s designed for passport renewals only. New applicants or minors are not eligible for this contactless process.
Key Features:
Online Application: You can apply for or renew your passport from the comfort of your home through a mobile application available on the Google Play Store (NIS Mobile).
No Biometric Enrollment: For renewals, there’s no need to physically go to a passport centre for biometric data capture; the system presumably uses existing biometric data.
Launch Date and Location: The system was set to launch on February 7, 2025, with the United Kingdom and Ireland being the first European countries to implement it.
Benefits:
Convenience: Reduces the need for physical visits to passport centres, saving time and travel costs.
Efficiency: Streamlines the application process, potentially reducing waiting times for passport renewals.
Security: Digital processes can enhance security by reducing the physical handling of documents, though this depends on the robustness of the digital system.
How to Proceed:
Download the App: Get the NIS Mobile app from the Google Play Store.
Follow Instructions: The app will guide you through the renewal process. Ensure all details are correct as per your current passport.
Payment: Be prepared to make payments online for the passport fee.
