In the ongoing federal sex trafficking trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs, prosecutors have raised concerns that key witness Casandra Cassie Ventura, who is eight and a half months pregnant, may go into labor during her testimony, potentially leading to a mistrial.
Cassie Ventura, Combs’ ex-girlfriend, has been on the witness stand for four days, detailing allegations of physical abuse, sexual misconduct, and coercion during their decade-long relationship.
Prosecutors allege that the defense has intentionally prolonged Ventura’s cross-examination, introducing over 400 exhibits and delaying proceedings, which could push her testimony into next week. They argue that this strategy risks Ventura going into labor mid-testimony, which could result in a mistrial and benefit the defense by halting the trial. Judge Arun Subramanian has ordered the defense to complete their questioning by Friday afternoon to avoid such outcomes.
During her testimony, Cassie Ventura recounted instances of violence, forced participation in group sex events dubbed “Freak-Offs,” and an incident where Combs allegedly handed her a loaded gun. She also described a 2016 hotel assault, telling Combs in a text, “I’m not a rag doll. I’m somebody’s child,” referencing his drug- and alcohol-fueled violence. Despite moments of affection shown in exchanged texts, Ventura described feeling ashamed and traumatized.
The defense has challenged Ventura’s credibility, highlighting past consensual behavior and inconsistencies in her 2018 rape allegations. They portrayed her as a willing participant in Combs’ lifestyle. However, Ventura testified that her continued communication and even consensual sex with Combs following the alleged rape were part of a traumatizing and controlling dynamic.
Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges, including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, which could result in a life sentence if convicted. The trial, taking place in Manhattan, is expected to last two months.
