The Oyo State Police Command has finally broken its silence on the stray bullet incident that claimed the life of an Ibadan student, now identified as Kehinde Alade.

The Police claimed that the father of the deceased was allegedly evading arrest for a traffic violation when the incident occurred on May 20, 2025, along the Gbagi market road in the Egbeda LGA, Ibadan.

According to a statement by Police Public Relations Officer Adewale Osifeso, the stray bullet incident unfolded during a joint operation with the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA).

Osifeso, in the statement, said the team attempted to stop a black Honda Accord LAGOS registration number FST 639 JJ, driven by the teen’s father, identified as Odunayo, for driving against traffic.

Instead of complying, Odunayo allegedly accelerated, ramming into two OYRTMA vehicles and a police patrol truck, prompting an officer to fire a shot that tragically struck the teenager.

The statement reads in part: “Rather than complying with lawful directives, the driver allegedly accelerated towards the enforcement team in an attempt to evade arrest, ramming into two OYTMA vehicles and a Police Buffalo Patrol truck.

“To prevent further damage and harm to officers and other road users, barricades were set up to demobilize the fleeing vehicle.

“However, the driver reportedly broke through these barricades, continuing to drive recklessly and endangering lives.

“In an attempt to immobilize the vehicle, a police corporal discharged a firearm aimed at the tyres.

“Tragically, the bullet missed and struck Kehinde Alade ‘m’, who was seated in the rear seat behind the driver.

“He was immediately rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival.”

The police spokesperson also confirmed the officer involved is in custody and under investigation.

Pan-Atlantic Kompass had reported that the teenager, a WASSCE candidate, was said to be en route to an examination with his twin brother when the stray bullet struck him.

He was rushed to University College Hospital (UCH) but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The stray bullet incident triggered protests, with angry residents and youths marching to the Oyo State Secretariat, demanding justice for the victim.
