Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno’s defection plan has sparked discontent among the people of Akwa Ibom.
Many citizens of the state voiced their opposition to Eno’s defection plan.
This development happened during a recent town hall meeting in Ikot Abasi, when Eno expressed that he had engaged in extensive consultations and felt it was time for the state to align with the ruling party at the federal level, stating, “It is time to move.”
He added: “We’re progressively moving forward, linking Akwa Ibom to the center. And I know you’re going with us. Are you going with us, so we can connect to the center?”
However, Eno’s defection plan was met with fierce opposition from Akwa Ibomites, who voiced their disapproval with a resounding “No!”
Despite the opposition expressed by citizens, Eno persisted in advocating for his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said Akwa Ibom State must be actively engaged and recognized within the national political landscape.
He continued: “We thank you for your support. I’ve gone round to consult… And so we have done enough consultation. The time has come for us to move. And we will go to where God is leading us.
“Do not be afraid. Believe in us. Believe in President Bola Tinubu because the future is bright. We are already a minority state in Nigeria. If we come again and start breaking ourselves into pieces, we become a minority of the minorities and cannot get anything.”
Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that this comes after Eno had publicly expressed his concerns about PDP, comparing it to a “faulty aircraft” which he said he feels is unable to carry him safely to his political goals in 2027.
