Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday, June 6, 2025.

Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that the decision of Eno to join APC has ended PDP’s 26-year dominance in Akwa Ibom.

Speaking during an official announcement on Friday at the Government House in Uyo, the state capital, Umo Eno said the decision followed “three months of wide consultation” with critical stakeholders across the state.

He also cited his admiration for President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and the need to align with the federal government for continued state development as key reasons for his move.

He said: “After completing the rounds of my consultation as your servant whom you have elected to serve, I have therefore decided to progressively move to the APC.

”We’re joining the APC today in the state interest and because of our critical admiration and respect for President Tinubu and to provide the needed support for Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

”We are not joining the APC from the position of weakness but from the position of strength and alive. We are joining the APC out of a need to align our state with the center.”

This development confirms weeks of speculation that Eno is set to join the APC.

Recall that the governor had issued a stern directive to his commissioners and political appointees, mandating them to either follow him to the APC or resign.

Eno’s defection also comes weeks after Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State dumped the PDP for the APC.

This means the influence of PDP in the south-south region of Nigeria is further crumbling as they only control two out of six states in the region.

As of press time, PDP is only controlling Bayelsa State and Rivers State, a state currently under a State of emergency.
