The European Union Commission (EUC) is set to implement changes to the EU luggage rules.
The new changes could eliminate extra fees for carry-on bags, ensuring every passenger, including Nigerians and Africans, can bring a small cabin bag and personal item on board for free.
Voted on by the European Parliament’s Transport and Tourism Committee, this proposal aims to standardize baggage policies across EU airlines.
If passed, the new EU luggage rules promise a fairer, more transparent travel experience by July 2025.
Here’s what you need to know about this new reform;
According to the proposal, the new rules will apply to;
• One cabin bag up to 100cm in total dimensions (length + width + height)
• One personal item that fits under the seat, sized up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm
• Total weight allowance: up to 7kg (15.4 lbs)
• No additional fees, regardless of the airline.
• These updated rules would apply to all flights within the EU as well as flights entering or leaving the EU.
Aside from the EU luggage rules, the commission has also moved to push policies that would improve passenger rights.
Part of the policies include banning airlines from charging seat selection fees for children under 12, ensuring families can sit together without extra costs.
Under the new rule, ticket vendors will now be required to disclose the full cost of flights, including service fees, at the time of booking.
Also, passengers will now be entitled to compensation if a delay causes them to miss a connecting flight, even if it’s on another mode of transport (like an airport bus) booked through the same operator.
