UAE Halts Freelance Visas, Leaves Remote Workers in Limbo

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced a decision to suspend freelance visas for remote workers aiming to travel to the country.

This move has left many digital nomads and self-employed professionals scrambling for alternatives as their dreams of working from the UAE’s vibrant hubs like Dubai and Abu Dhabi face uncertainty.

Despite suspending new freelance visas, renewals of existing freelance visas remain unaffected.

However, the government failed to give an update on the reason for the suspension of the freelance visas or how long the pause would last.

Checks by Pan-Atlantic Kompass revealed that the freelance visa is a residency permit that enables foreign nationals to legally live and work in the UAE as self-employed professionals.

It is popular among content creators, consultants, tech specialists, and other skilled freelancers seeking flexibility and access to the UAE’s robust business ecosystem.

Before now, freelance visa holders enjoyed benefits like legal right to reside and work independently in the UAE, no requirement for a local sponsor or employer, and access to the UAE’s world-class infrastructure and lifestyle.

Although the UAE announced the suspension of freelancers’ visas, there are still other alternative visas and residency options.

Below are other options available for self-employed professionals:

1. UAE Green Residence Visa: This five-year visa is designed for freelancers, skilled employees, and investors. It allows self-employed individuals to live and work in the UAE without a sponsor, offering greater flexibility and long-term stability.

2. Dubai Talent Pass: Issued by the Dubai Airport Free Zone, this license enables freelancers to operate across various sectors for up to three years. However, a Talent Pass License does not automatically grant residency; applicants must still secure a separate residence visa.

3. Investor and Partner Visas: For those willing to start a business or invest in the UAE, these visas provide another route to residency and work rights.
