Nigeria’s Longest Reigning Monarch, Oba Adetona Dies Hours After Buhari’s Passing

The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, said to be the country’s longest-reigning monarch, has died at age 91 — just hours after news broke of the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari in London.

This marks the end of the 65-year reign of Oba Adetona, a revered monarch.

His demise was confirmed on Sunday, July 13, 2025, just hours after the announcement of the death of his longtime friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari as earlier reported by Pan-Atlantic Kompass

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, confirmed the monarch’s death in a statement issued from Abeokuta, the state capital, on Sunday.

Confirming the monarch’s death in a statement shared on his X page on Sunday, Abiodun described it as a huge loss to the state and the nation at large.

He wrote: “We mourn the passing of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Awujale of Ijebuland.

“With deep sorrow, we announce the transition of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, who joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.

“This sad development, coinciding with the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, marks a profound loss not just for Ogun State, but for the entire nation.

“Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, symbolized unity, wisdom, and development. Under his reign, Ijebuland witnessed unparalleled cultural renaissance, infrastructural growth, and economic advancement.”

The Awujale of Ijebuland was born on May 10, 1934. He ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, at the age of 26, becoming one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs. His early education in Ijebu-Ode’s Baptist and Ansar-Ud-Deen schools, followed by studies at Olu-Iwa (now Adeola Odutola) College and accountancy training in the United Kingdom.

Hailing from the Anikinaiya Royal House, the Awujale of Ijebuland blended traditional values with modern governance, fostering development in Ijebuland and beyond.

His reign saw the revitalization of the Regberegbe (age grade system), transforming it into a tool for community unity and social responsibility. Also, the annual Ojude Oba festival, under his stewardship, grew into an internationally celebrated cultural event, showcasing Ijebu heritage and attracting global tourists.
