Nigeria’s U.S. mission offices in Abuja and Lagos have been closed on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, to observe the public holiday declared in the country to honour the late President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos announced their closure on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

The U.S. embassy explained that the closure of the offices is to align with Nigeria’s public holiday to commemorate Buhari’s legacy of service.

The closure of Nigeria’s U.S. mission offices was also confirmed through a statement on the Mission’s official X account, noting that all visa appointments scheduled for July 15 would be rescheduled.

The statement reads: “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in observance of the public holiday declared by the Nigerian government in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“All visa appointments slated for July 15, 2025, will be rescheduled.”

The U.S. Mission said regular consular operations will resume on Wednesday, July 16.

Recall that the Federal Government of Nigeria had declared a public holiday as part of national mourning for the former president, who died in London on Sunday, following a brief illness.

Also, President Bola Tinubu directed that national flags should be flown at half-mast from July 13 to July 19, 2025.

His burial is scheduled to take place on Tuesday in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.

Tributes have continued to pour in from world leaders, diplomats, and foreign missions acknowledging Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s development and his role in regional security efforts during his time in office.
