The Nigerian passport ranking has achieved a major milestone, climbing to 88th place in the 2025 Henley Passport Index.
The latest Nigerian passport ranking represents the country’s highest position in five years.
A breakdown of the ranking shows that Nigeria shares the 88th spot with Ethiopia and Myanmar, the same countries it was grouped with earlier this year when ranked 91st.
This improvement, noted in the July 18, 2025 report, revealed that Nigeria’s efforts to enhance its global image and streamline visa processes have been yielding results, making travel easier for business, leisure, and educational purposes.
However, despite the improvement in the ranking, the Nigerian passport only has visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 55 countries.
The latest ranking comes after the Nigerian passport was placed in the 92nd position in 2024.
In July 2023, Nigeria was placed at the 90th spot on the list.
In 2022, it was named the 98th best passport, rising from a low ebb of 103rd in 2021.
The latest Henley Passport Index ranked Nigeria only above six African countries—the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea, Libya, and Somalia.
Meanwhile, Seychelles retained its position as Africa’s most powerful passport but fell to the 2nd position globally with access to 156 nations.
Globally, Singapore remained the most powerful passport, with access to 193 nations, while Afghanistan still held last, with access to 25 countries.
The United States, which held the number one position back in 2014, has slipped down to the 10th place in the rankings.
