Crystal Palace, on Sunday, August 10, 2025, defeated Liverpool on penalties to claim the 2025 Community Shield trophy Wembley Stadium.
The Eagles, making their first-ever appearance in the competition, overcame the Premier League champions in a thrilling encounter.
Despite being heavy underdogs, Palace’s determination and key contributions from players like Jean-Philippe Mateta and Eberechi Eze secured their second major trophy in club history, following their FA Cup triumph earlier in the year.
Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that the match began with Liverpool asserting early dominance, as new signing Hugo Ekitike found the net to give the Reds a lead.
However, Crystal Palace responded swiftly as Mateta converted a 17th-minute penalty to level the score.
The game remained tightly contested until Liverpool went ahead again after Jeremie Frimpong dinked the ball over Dean Henderson.
The first half ended with a scoreline of 2-1 in Liverpool’s favour.
However, Crystal Palace came out firing and were rewarded after Sarr found the back of the net in the 77th minute.
The match ended 2-2, meaning a penalty shootout was needed to determine the winner of the 2025 Community Shield Trophy.
Salah was first to step up and ballooned it over the bar, but Mateta wasn’t so profligate, handing the Eagles an immediate advantage.
Henderson’s brilliant full-length save from Mac Allister was equalled by Allison from Eze, before Gakpo and Sarr traded successful spot-kicks.
Harvey Elliott’s miss, again thanks to a brilliant stop by the Palace keeper, gave new signing Borna Sosa the chance for the south Londoners to win it, but his powerful effort crashed back off the woodwork.
A fearsome drive from Szoboszlai kept Liverpool alive, before an even more wicked finish from 93rd-minute sub, Justin Devenny, handed Palace their second honour of the year.
