The Nigerian Federal Government has announced plans to appoint Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an aviation ambassador following a recent incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
This decision was announced by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, SAN.
He said that the decision to name KWAM 1 as an aviation ambassador is aimed at promoting proper airport security protocols and raising public awareness about acceptable conduct in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The statement reads in part: “In the case of KWAM 1, the NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to a one-month period. FAAN will also work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward.
“Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the Police.
“In the case of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, and the co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba of VALUEJET, the NCAA is to restore their licenses after the same period of one-month ban after undergoing some mandatory professional re-appraisal. The details will be announced by the NCAA.”
Recall that the controversy began on August 5, 2025, when KWAM 1 was involved in a clash with airline staff and security officials at Abuja’s airport while attempting to board a ValueJet flight to Lagos.
Accused of carrying a prohibited flask believed to contain alcohol, the musician allegedly spilled its contents on personnel and obstructed the aircraft’s movement, leading to a six-month flight ban and a criminal complaint.
Following his public apology, where he clarified the flask contained water for medical reasons, Keyamo also announced that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will reduce the ban to one month and withdraw the complaint against the musician.
