Recent data have revealed that the African aviation industry is growing as airports across the continent have been recording increases in passenger numbers and flight activity.

Official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has revealed Africa’s busiest airports as of July 2025.

According to the official data, African airlines saw a 9.5% year-on-year growth in international passenger demand in May 2025.

Breakdown of the data revealed that the growth in international passenger traffic in Africa was due to an increase in traffic on the Africa–Asia corridor, where demand surged 15.9% year-on-year.

Johannesburg International Airport (South Africa) – 249 flights daily

Johannesburg International Airport (JNB), in South Africa is Africa’s busiest airport as of July 2025. The airport records an average of 249 flights daily as of July 2025

It was also gathered that the JNB connects passengers to 77 destinations worldwide through 42 scheduled airlines.

Cairo International Airport (Egypt) – 242 flights daily

Cairo International Airport (CAI) is the largest airport in Egypt, ranking as Africa’s second busiest aviation hub with an average of 242 flights per day as of July 2025.

The airport has access to 122 destinations worldwide through 57 airlines.

Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (Ethiopia) – 190 flights daily

Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) in Ethiopia, ranking as Africa’s third busiest airport with an average of 190 flights per day as of July 2025.

The airport has access to 120 destinations worldwide through 14 scheduled airlines. 

Mohammed V International Airport (Morocco): 114 flights daily 

Mohammed V International Airport (CMN), located in Casablanca, Morocco, has an average of 114 flights daily. 

The airport has access to 107 destinations through 27 airlines in scheduled passenger traffic. 

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport – (Nairobi): 108 flights daily

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), located in Nairobi, is one of Africa’s top 5 busiest airports in 2025 with an average of 108 flights every day.

The airport connects travelers to 64 destinations with 39 airlines in scheduled passenger traffic.

Houari Boumediene Airport–(Algeria): 102 flights daily

Houari Boumediene Airport (ALG), located in Algiers, is the largest and busiest airport in Algeria. It connects passengers to 80 destinations through 25 international and regional airlines.

Cape Town International Airport (South Africa) – 102 flights daily

Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in South Africa records 102 flights daily. 

As of July 2025, the airport connects passengers to 40 destinations through 27 scheduled airlines.

Murtala Muhammed Airport (Nigeria) – 99 flights daily

Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, is the largest and busiest airport in Nigeria.

It connects passengers to 46 destinations through 34 airlines in scheduled passenger traffic. 

Zanzibar International Airport (Tanzania): 92 flights daily

Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ), the main gateway to the Zanzibar archipelago in the United Republic of Tanzania. The airport has an average of 92 flights per day.

The airport connects passengers to 21 destinations served by 27 airlines in scheduled passenger traffic.

Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania): 84 flights daily

Dar Es Salaam International Airport, Tanzania, handles an average of 84 flights daily.

The airport connects travelers to 37 destinations through 24 airlines, making it a key aviation hub in East Africa.
