The details of what Nigerian President Bola Tinubu discussed with President Lula da Silva of Brazil have emerged.
This comes after Tinubu arrived in Brazil on Monday on a state visit.
The Nigerian leader, who flew in from Los Angeles, United States, was received at the Brasília Air Base by senior Brazilian government officials, including Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, and Ambassador Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete, Brazil’s envoy to Nigeria.
Taking to his official X handle, Tinubu explained that the meeting with Lula was aimed at bolstering bilateral relations between the two countries.
He also described his meeting with Brazilian leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as a renewal of the “historic relationship” between both nations.
The Nigerian leader expressed his readiness to deepen cooperation in agriculture, energy, trade, and culture with the Brazilian leader and the government.
He said: “Today’s engagement marks the renewal of the historic relationship between Nigeria and Brazil.
“I look forward to working with President Lula to deepen cooperation in agriculture, energy, trade, and culture, towards building a future of shared prosperity across the Atlantic.”
Also, sources familiar with the development revealed that during the meeting, Tinubu discussed with Lula on ways to deepen trade between the two countries.
Sources added that the Nigerian President is exploring trade partners after U.S. President Donald Trump slapped a 15% tariff on Nigeria.
Sources said Tinubu is also aiming to leverage Brazil’s expertise in biofuels and agribusiness to address food security challenges in Nigeria.
