The U.S. Mission in Nigeria has announced that both the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2025, in honor of the U.S. Labor Day holiday.

The U.S. mission announced that routine consular services, including visa processing and passport renewals, will be suspended for the day, resuming on Tuesday, September 2.

The Embassy announced the decision in a statement posted Sunday on its official X account.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2025, in observance of the U.S. Labour Day,” the Mission stated.

The Mission further noted that essential services will remain available through emergency contact channels.

Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that the U.S. Embassy closure in Nigeria is in line with a long-standing tradition dating back to 1882, when labor activist Matthew Maguire first proposed Labor Day to honor workers’ contributions to the nation’s economy and society.

This federal holiday, celebrated annually on the first Monday of September, recognizes the contributions of American workers.
