The government of Nigeria has unveiled a new curriculum for Junior Secondary School students and Senior Secondary School students.
The new curriculum, which takes effect in September 2025, will make subjects like AI & Robotics, coding, and project writing compulsory for students in secondary schools.
The announcement that Nigeria has unveiled a new curriculum was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the 2025 International Conference of the African Curriculum Association.
Alausa said the new curriculum overhaul aims to equip students with 21st-century skills.
The Minister also added that the new curriculum is crafted to position Nigeria as a leader in technological innovation.
He also disclosed that the new curriculum, developed by the Nigerian Education Research and Development Council (NERDC).
Giving further details, the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, on Wednesday shared the full list of the subjects in the new curriculum.
Olusegun, in a post on his X handle, displayed an unsigned and unmarked image said to contain the subjects for Junior Secondary School and Senior Secondary School.
At the JSS level, students will engage with basic coding languages like Python and Scratch, alongside robotics through beginner kits.
AI and coding education will be integrated into the Digital Literacy and Coding subject, which also covers tools like Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet research skills.
For senior secondary students, the curriculum expands to include advanced AI concepts, programming, and one mandatory trade subject, ensuring a blend of technical and practical skills.
“The new curriculum for Nigerian Schools, which will commence from the next session in September 2025, has been released,” he said.

Mathematics & Measurement: Numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, rates, geometry (angles, area, volume), algebra, statistics, graphs, measurement (km, m, cm, g, kg, ml, °C, time zones).
English Language: Essay writing (narrative, descriptive), advanced grammar (clauses, idioms), comprehension, vocabulary, oral (debates, speeches, drama).
Integrated Science: Physics (motion, forces, energy), chemistry (matter, mixtures, reactions), biology (cells, reproduction, ecology), earth science (climate, resources), technology, and lab safety.
