Lunar Eclipse Sighted in Nigeria, Other African Countries

A lunar eclipse has captivated millions of Nigerians on Sunday night as the moon turned reddish.

The Lunar eclipse, also known as the “blood moon was sighted on Nigerian skies around 7:30pm and is expected to last till around 9:00pm. 

The reddish moon has been sighted in major Nigerian cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt.

Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that this rare event, the second total lunar eclipse of 2025, united communities across the continent in shared wonder.

It was also gathered that the latest lunar eclipse sighted in Nigeria, other African countries that saw the Moon pass fully into Earth’s shadow, is one of the longest totalities since 2022. 

According to experts from the Nigerian Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and international bodies like NASA, the eclipse’s peak occurred at about 9:11 PM WAT, with the Moon rising just after the partial phase had begun in some western regions. 

Aside from Nigeria, the eclipse was visible in other African countries like Ghana, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Kenya, Benin, Togo, Niger, Chad, and São Tomé and Príncipe, with the total phase lasting a full 82 minutes.  

Also, Southern African nations, including South Africa and Namibia, caught the later stages as the Moon climbed higher.

Pan-Atlantic Kompass also reports that a total lunar eclipse happens when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon. When the situation happens the Earth casts a shadow that can turn the Moon reddish.
