The Nigerian Presidency has announced that President Bola Tinubu and United States President Donald Trump are scheduled for a high-stakes meeting over the ‘Country of Particular Concern’ tag on Nigeria.
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on policy communication, made this known in a press statement issued on his official X handle.
Bwala, in the statement, said that during the meeting with Trump, Tinubu will “resolve” the fallout that led to the Country of Particular Concern tag on Nigeria.
The special adviser confirmed the forthcoming bilateral meeting is aimed at correcting what he described as the “misconception” that Nigeria’s security crisis—fueled by extremist groups like Boko Haram, ISWAP, and militant bandits—is primarily a religious conflict.
He added that during the meeting, Tinubu will present a detailed report, stressing that terrorist violence in the country is indiscriminate, affecting citizens of all faiths.
According to Bwala, any differences in perspective would be resolved during the upcoming meeting, which he said could take place at the “State House” in Abuja or the White House in Washington.
The presidential aide also added that Trump has supported Nigeria by authorising arms sales, which Tinubu has effectively utilised in the fight against terrorism, yielding significant results.
Bwala stated: “Both President Bola Tinubu and President Donald Trump have shared interests in the fight against insurgency and all forms of terrorism against humanity.
“President Trump has assisted Nigeria a lot by authorizing the sale of arms to Nigeria, and President Tinubu has adequately utilized the opportunity in the fight against terrorism, for which we have massive results to show for it.
“As for the differences as to whether terrorists in Nigeria target only Christians or, in fact, all faiths and no faiths, the differences, if they exist, would be discussed and resolved by the two leaders when they meet in the coming days, either in the State House or White House.”
Meanwhile, Riley Moore, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, has issued a warning to the Nigerian government over the alleged targeted attacks on Christians in the West African nation.
“President Trump has provided a forewarning if you do not correct the current state of inaction to stop the killing of our brothers and sisters in Christ in your country. The days of the US looking the other way are over,” the lawmaker wrote on X.
“I urge you to cooperate with us in preventing this atrocity that worsens every day. We want your people to live in peace — all of them, especially Christians.
“The President has been clear. I would not test his resolve. Many have tried and all have failed. We will not allow the gates of hell to prevail against the faithful.”
Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that Trump slammed the Country of Particular Concern tag on Nigeria on Friday.
The U.S President announced that his decision came after alleged evidence of persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
On Saturday, Trump threatened military action in Nigeria if the government fails to address the Christian genocide allegations.
He said: “If the Nigerian government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the USA will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing’, to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.
“I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action.
“If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our cherished Christians. Warning: the Nigerian government had better move fast!”
Following the declaration, United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth also announced that the War Department is ready for military action in Nigeria if the Nigerian government fails to halt the alleged persecution and mass killings of Christians in Nigeria.
Hegseth stated: “Yes sir. The killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria — and anywhere — must end immediately.
“The Department of War is preparing for action. Either the Nigerian government protects Christians, or we will kill the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
