The Nigeria national team, Super Eagles, has officially begun its quest for a fourth continental title with a winning start at the 2025 AFCON.
The Super Eagles secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.
Playing at the Stade de Fès in Morocco on Tuesday, the three-time champions showed resilience to overcome a persistent Taifa Stars side and claim the top spot in Group C.
Nigeria took control early in the first half, dominating possession and creating several chances through the wings.
The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi rose highest to power home a header from an Alex Iwobi cross.
Ajayi’s powerful header gave the Super Eagles a deserved lead after a dominant opening half-hour where Akor Adams had already rattled the woodwork.
Tanzania equalized in the 50th minute, briefly stunning the Nigerian contingent.
The deadlock didn’t last long, as Ademola Lookman restored the lead just two minutes later with a clinical left-footed strike from outside the box. This decisive goal ensured the Super Eagles got off to a winning start at the 2025 AFCON, providing the perfect response to their recent disappointment in World Cup qualifying.
Coach Éric Chelle’s men now turn their attention to their upcoming fixtures against Tunisia and Uganda. With three points already in the bag, the pressure has eased slightly.
The Super Eagles will be hoping to win the 2025 AFCON after a final heartbreak at the 2023 AFCON and failure to secure a World Cup qualification in 2026.
