South African sensation Tyla has once again won the Grammy Awards, securing the Best African Music Performance category.
Tyla won the 2026 Grammy award for her hit track “Push 2 Start” at the 2026 ceremony.
This development left Nigerian heavyweights Davido and Burna Boy empty-handed in the keenly contested field.
The 68th Annual Grammy Awards, held in Los Angeles, saw Tyla edge out a star-studded lineup of nominees that included Burna Boy’s “Love,” Davido featuring Omah Lay’s “With You,” Ayra Starr and Wizkid’s “Gimme Dat,” and Eddy Kenzo & Mehran Matin’s “Hope & Love.”
Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that Tyla won a Grammy in the Best African Music Performance category, marking her second victory in this prestigious award since its inception.
Her win solidifies her rising status as a global force in African music, following her groundbreaking triumph with “Water” in the category’s inaugural year.
The outcome has sparked widespread discussion across social media and music circles, with many fans expressing disappointment over the results for Davido and Burna Boy.
Despite strong campaigns and massive streaming numbers for their entries, the Nigerian stars were unable to claim the golden gramophone this time.
While Burna Boy has a Grammy Award to his name, Davido has been hoping to win a Grammy Award. However, he will have to wait for next year’s edition to potentially win the coveted award.
This development follows the legendary Fela Kuti’s achievement as the first winner of the weekend, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy at the Special Merit Awards on Saturday, January 31st, 2026.
The recognition makes Fela the first African artist to ever receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammys.
Fela’s children — Yeni, Kunle, Shalewa, and Femi Kuti — accepted the award in their father’s honor. “I’m sure my father is smiling down on us,” Yeni said in the acceptance speech.
