The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially written itself into the history books after breaking the all-time attendance record.

During a Group E clash where Ecuador stunned Germany 2-1 at the New York/New Jersey Stadium, history was made off the pitch as the tournament officially shattered the all-time FIFA World Cup aggregate attendance record.

Just 56 matches into the newly expanded tournament, the total number of fans passing through the turnstiles reached an astonishing 3,605,357.

This eclipsed the previous historic record of 3,587,538 spectators, which had stood unmatched since the 1994 World Cup, also hosted in the United States.

The breaking of the 32-year-old record comes down to a blend of North American infrastructure and tournament restructuring.

The 2026 edition is the first in history to feature 48 teams and a total schedule of 104 matches across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

While critics pointed toward soaring ticket prices and travel logistics ahead of the tournament, fans have defied expectations. Stadium occupancy across all 16 host cities is trending at a historic 99.7% capacity.

The tournament also set a new single-day attendance record on Thursday, drawing 384,206 fans across all matches. FIFA said the World Cup is on pace to finish with an average stadium occupancy of 99.7% — the highest in tournament history.

The previous attendance record was established during the 1994 World Cup, when 24 teams played 52 matches in the United States, and stadiums were approximately 96% full.

This year’s tournament is the first World Cup to feature 48 national teams, expanding the field by 12 from the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The expanded format also increased the schedule to 104 matches, up from 64 four years ago.

Philadelphia remains one of the tournament’s busiest host cities and will stage two more matches: Croatia vs. Ghana on Saturday and a Round of 16 match on the Fourth of July.

Last week, tournament organizers also announced that Philadelphia’s FIFA Fan Festival had become the most-visited fan festival in the United States.

The attendance record for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to swell as the tournament enters its knockout phases, including the newly introduced Round of 32.

With 48 matches left to play before the grand final in New Jersey on July 19, analysts project the final 2026 World Cup attendance figure to soar well past the 4.5 million mark.
