What to Know as UAE Updates Remote Work Visa Rules

The government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially updated its remote work visa rules.

The latest update means the UAE has begun to implement stricter documentation requirements for digital nomads.

Under the newly revised guidelines, the UAE remote work visa income proof now requires applicants to submit six months of bank statements, doubling the previous requirement of three months.

By extending the look-back period, authorities are seeking to confirm that applicants possess a stable employment history and a reliable salary flow before they relocate to the Emirates.

Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that the one-year residency permit, which allows foreign nationals to live in the UAE while working remotely, has become a cornerstone of the country’s strategy to attract global talent.

Dubai first launched a Virtual Working Program in October 2020. That program is still active and has slightly different eligibility rules.

The federal Remote Working Visa, announced in March 2021, expanded the concept across the UAE with a clearer legal framework.

However, the update to the UAE remote work visa income proof serves as a more rigorous vetting process.

Along with the extended bank statements, the minimum monthly income threshold remains at $3,500 (approx. AED 12,850), though some specific emirates or programs may still vary slightly in their individual salary benchmarks.

Bank Statements: Now 6 months (previously 3).

Minimum Salary: $3,500 per month.

Health Insurance: Must be valid for use within the UAE.

Employment Proof: A contract or letter from an overseas employer valid for at least one year.

How to Apply for the UAE Remote Working Visa

Applicants can apply either from inside the UAE or from abroad. Applications are submitted online. In Abu Dhabi, accredited typing centres can also be used. The process is generally straightforward if the documents are complete.

Visa Fees and Processing Time

The government fee for the Remote Working Visa is around USD 81. This does not include medical examination costs or the Emirates ID card fee.

Processing usually takes five to seven working days, although timelines can vary depending on application volume.

Bringing Family Members to the UAE

Remote Working Visa holders are allowed to sponsor residence permits for their immediate family. This includes a spouse, children, and parents, subject to standard UAE residency rules.

Why the UAE Is Pushing Remote Work Visas

The visa allows professionals to work legally in the UAE without entering the local job market.

Remote workers benefit from the country’s strong internet infrastructure, modern cities, and its role as a major travel hub connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa.

At the same time, the UAE benefits from long-term visitors who spend locally while earning income abroad.
