The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been plunged into further uncertainty after a Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, declared the November 15, 2025, National Convention invalid.
The Court declared the party’s national convention invalid, citing gross violations of the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.
The court also barred Kabiru Turaki and others from presenting themselves as national officers of the party, dealing a significant blow to the faction that emerged from the convention.
In a ruling on Friday, Uche Agomoh, the presiding judge, also ruled that the Caretaker Committee led by Mohammed Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu is the only recognised NWC of the PDP, pending the conduct of a valid National Convention.
The judge held that PDP cannot disobey court orders and still approach the court to seek judicial approval for actions taken against the orders
Recall that on October 31, 2025, the federal high court in Abuja stopped the PDP from going ahead with the convention.
Justice Omotosho, the presiding judge, had held that evidence before the court showed that the party failed to hold valid state congresses before the planned national convention as stipulated in the 1999 constitution, INEC guidelines, as well as its own constitution.
Despite internal disputes within the party, the PDP went ahead with its highly anticipated two-day 2025 Elective National Convention at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Adamasingba, Ibadan. Tagged #Ibadan2025, the convention attracted thousands of party delegates, leaders, and supporters.
Reacting to the ruling in a statement posted on the PDP’s X handle on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the PDP is awaiting the final pronouncement of the appellate courts, which it believes will uphold its position.
The statement urged members to remain calm and resolute, insisting there is “absolutely no cause for alarm.” It added that the rebirth movement remains firmly on course.
The statement reads: “We are aware of the judgment of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, delivered this morning, which essentially declined to grant the order of mandamus sought on the ground that doing so would, in the court’s view, amount to sitting on appeal over judgments of courts of coordinate jurisdiction.
“We have accordingly briefed our lawyers to immediately file an appeal and to take all further legal steps necessary to advance our arguments and firmly protect our position on this matter.
“Notwithstanding this judgment, the Kabiru Turaki–led Peoples Democratic Party, which emerged from the Ibadan Convention, remains legally intact and unshaken, as we await the authoritative pronouncement of the appellate courts.
“We therefore urge our members to remain resolute and committed as there is absolutely no cause for alarm. The REBIRTH movement remains firmly on course.”
