The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced a move to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.

The party also announced that the presidential ticket would only be in the South for a single four-year term.

The motion to zone the presidential ticket to the South was moved at the ongoing Maiden edition of the party’s National Convention of the NDC by the member representing Ogbaru Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly, Afam Victor Ogene, and was adopted by the delegates.

The event is taking place at the Angeles event centre and mall in the nation’s capital.

Peter Obi, Labour Party (LP) standard-bearer in 2023; Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano; and Seriake Dickson, NDC national leader, are among the party’s chieftains attending the gathering.

It was also resolved that after the four-year single term, the Presidential ticket will be automatically zoned to the north.

With this development, it has cleared the way for the former governor of Anambra State, Obi, and other southern aspirants to purchase the presidential nomination form of the party.

Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that the National Convention comes as the NDC recently witnessed an influx of politicians who defected from other political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

On Tuesday, no fewer than 17 members of the House of Representatives defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC.

Their defections were announced on the floor of the House during plenary.

Lawmakers who defected to the NDC include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, and Munachim Umezuruike.

Others are Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, Murphy Omoruyi, and Abdulhakeem Ado.

The defections of the lawmakers to the NDC came two days after Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the party from the ADC.
