The revered leader of Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo has passed away at the age of 96, marking the end of an extraordinary era.
Adebanjo, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and a stalwart advocate for justice and equality leaves behind a legacy that will resonate for generations to come.
His demise was announced in a statement issued on Friday by his children, namely, Mrs Ayotunde Atteh (nee Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs Adeola Azeez (nee Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo.
“He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria home at the age of 96,” the statement read.
Born on April 10, 1928, in Isanya Ogbo via Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a journalist-turned-lawyer, lived a life of service, courage, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of his people and the unity of Nigeria.
A member of the 1978 Constituent Assembly and the 2014 National Political Conference, Adebanjo staunchly believes in “saying as it is” whenever he was called upon to address national issues.
He was one of the last surviving associates of the famed Yoruba leader, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whom he regarded as a mentor and political leader. Adebanjo’s early involvement in Nigeria’s nationalist struggle laid the foundation for a lifetime of political activism and public service.
Adebanjo was a leading voice in Nigeria’s struggle for independence and played a critical role in the formation of the Action Group (AG), which promoted the ideals of federalism, social welfare, and regional autonomy. Throughout the decades, he remained a staunch defender of democracy and stood against successive military regimes, enduring arrests and harassment for his beliefs.
As a founding member and later leader of Afenifere, the socio-political organization of the Yoruba people, Adebanjo worked tirelessly to promote Yoruba interests while advocating for a restructured Nigeria where every region could thrive equally. His dedication to true federalism and justice resonated across Nigeria’s political spectrum.
Adebanjo was also known for his sharp intellect, fearless stance on political issues, and unwavering integrity. Even in the face of adversity, he remained steadfast in his convictions, earning him the respect and admiration of many Nigerians. He was a vocal critic of electoral malpractice, bad governance, and corruption, always advocating for a Nigeria based on justice, fairness, and equity.
