Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered yet another setback in their quest for a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification, as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The result leaves the three-time African champions’ qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
The Super Eagles, under the stewardship of new head coach Eric Chelle, entered the match riding the high of a 2-0 victory over Rwanda just days prior.
With star striker Victor Osimhen leading the line, Nigeria looked poised to secure three crucial points against a Zimbabwe side languishing at the bottom of Group C.
Osimhen delivered once again, heading in a well-timed cross to give the hosts the lead and ignite hopes of a comfortable win.
However, despite dominating possession and creating several chances, the Super Eagles failed to capitalize on their advantage.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, the Warriors struck a devastating blow. Huddersfield Town striker Taranda Chirewa capitalized on a defensive lapse to fire home a 90th-minute equalizer, silencing the Uyo crowd and snatching a vital point for the visitors.
The draw marks another missed opportunity for Nigeria, who have now managed only one win in six World Cup qualifying matches. Sitting fourth in Group C with just four points from two games in this international window, the Super Eagles’ path to the 2026 finals in the United States, Canada, and Mexico looks increasingly difficult.
South Africa currently lead the group with thirteen points, followed closely by Rwanda and Benin leaving Nigeria with a mountain to climb in the remaining fixtures.
