The Nigerian government has commenced payment of the new monthly allowance of N77,000 to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, a significant increase from the previous N33,000.

This development follows the promise made by NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu to implement the new allowance starting in March 2025.

The increase is in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024 and is expected to boost the morale and motivation of NYSC members. Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande has assured that the backlog of the new monthly allowance will also be paid.

Several corps members have already received alerts of the new allowance, with one member, Chinedu Charles, who is currently serving in Ogun, expressing his relief. “I received the alert of ₦77,000 on Wednesday. This is long overdue, but at least for now we’re happy it’s being implemented.”

Jeremiah Olatinwo, publisher of Corpers Diary, has also confirmed that corps members have started receiving their new allowance.

Key Highlights of the New Allowance:

  • Increased Allowance: The new monthly allowance of N77,000 is a significant increase from the previous N33,000.
  • Backlog Payment: The Minister of Youth Development has assured that the backlog of the new monthly allowance will also be paid.
  • Implementation: The new allowance is expected to be implemented starting in March 2025.
  • Alignment with National Minimum Wage: The increase is in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

Despite the progress, uncertainties remain regarding full disbursement, as many corps members are still waiting for their turn to receive the increased allowance as it’s being implemented in phases, Pan-Atlantic Kompass learnt.
