Nigeria has officially thrown its hat into the ring to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) confirming its interest in bringing the prestigious multi-sport event to Abuja.
The NOC revealed that it met the March 28, 2025, deadline for submitting an expression of interest to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
The committee’s spokesperson, Tony Nezianya, emphasized that hosting the Games in Abuja would not only showcase Nigeria’s development but also invigorate its sports culture and enhance its international reputation.
The statement reads in part: “Nigeria’s bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games presents a unique opportunity to demonstrate our progress as a nation, foster national unity, and celebrate our rich cultural diversity.
“This is more than just a sporting event—it’s a chance to leave a lasting legacy for future generations.”
The Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that if successful, Nigeria would become the first African nation to host the Games since the event’s inception in 1930.
Nigeria’s last major multi-sport hosting experience came in 2003 when Abuja staged the All-African Games (COJA 2003).
