The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has launched a comprehensive investigation into the death of 14-year-old Kehinde Alade, a WASSCE student fatally shot in Ibadan, Oyo State, during a traffic enforcement operation.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, along Gbagi-Alakia road, has sparked widespread outrage, with many demanding for justice for the student.
Egbetokun in a statement issued by Muyiwa Adejobi, the force spokesperson, said the police officer involved in the shooting has been taken into custody.
Adejobi said the IGP assured members of the public that justice will be served, while pledging transparent investigation into the matter.
The statement reads in part: “The Inspector-General of Police condemned the incident and assured that the officer involved in the shooting has been taken into custody while a full-scale investigation is underway.
“He equally reiterated that the process will be transparent, and its findings will be made public to ensure justice is duly served as he expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased young man.”
Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that Kehinde Alade was said to be en-route to his WASSCE center, accompanied by his father and twin brother, when a stray bullet struck him.
The Oyo State Police Command has also confirmed that the shot was allegedly fired by a police officer attempting to apprehend a Kehinde Alade’s father who allegedly violated traffic rules.
