Liverpool Forward Diogo Jota Killed in Tragic Car Crash in Spain

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has tragically lost his life in a devastating car accident in northwestern Spain, leaving the football world in shock.

The 28-year-old Portuguese star, alongside his brother André Silva, died in a fatal car accident in the province of Zamora, Spain, just days after celebrating his wedding.

The accident was said to have occurred in the late hours of Wednesday, July 2, 2025, on the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria, Zamora, a route connecting northern Portugal to Spain.

According to reports, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was traveling in a Lamborghini with his 26-year-old brother, André, a professional footballer for FC Penafiel, when a tire blowout caused the vehicle to veer off the road and burst into flames.

Emergency services, including the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade and Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center, responded swiftly but confirmed the deaths of both brothers at the scene.

This tragic incident has begun to generate an outpouring of grief from fans, teammates, and football icons worldwide.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville posted on X, “That is heartbreaking news on Diogo Jota and his brother. All my love and best wishes to his family.”

Also, former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher has also issued a condolences message, saying: “Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning. Thoughts are with everyone of their family & friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids.”

Similarly, TV presenter Piers Morgan described the news as “desperately sad,” noting Jota’s recent marriage.

Portugal’s Prime Minister, Luis Montenegro, expressed national grief, stating, “The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honored Portugal’s name, and his brother is unexpected and tragic.”

Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that Jota was an important figure in Liverpool’s recent successes. He joined Liverpool in 2020 in a £41 million transfer deal. He has made 182 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Wolves.

He lifted the Premier League title in May, having previously won the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups in his five years at the club.

Internationally, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota earned nearly 50 caps for Portugal, contributing to their Nations League triumphs in 2018 and 2025 alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.
