Muhammadu Buhari is Dead; The ex-President’s Life in a Rap

Muhammadu Buhari, born December 17, 1942, was a Nigerian military officer and statesman who served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023.

A retired Major General, Buhari first came to power in 1983 through a military coup and led as Head of State until 1985, when he was overthrown. Known for his anti-corruption stance and rigid discipline, he later transitioned into democratic politics. Buhari contested for the presidency multiple times before making history in 2015 by defeating an incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan, in a landmark election.

Though much electoral promises were made ahead of his election in 2015, his administration failed on anti-corruption, security—especially against Boko Haram—and economy, and was often criticized for economic hardship and human rights concerns.

A native of Daura in Katsina State, Buhari remained a central figure in Nigerian politics for decades. After leaving office in 2023, he retired from public life.
