Lagos State is currently hosting Africa’s inaugural E1 electric powerboat championship.
Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that the E1 electric powerboat is being held on the waters of Lagos Lagoon.
The E1 World Championship, sanctioned by the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), marks the world’s first all-electric offshore powerboat series.
Pan-Atlantic Kompass also reports that several celebrity-backed teams are contesting in the ongoing E1 electric powerboat championship.
Football legend Didier Drogba’s Team Drogba, supported by Afreximbank, represented African pride on the water, while U.S. icons Tom Brady and LeBron James lent their expertise to competing squads. Music mogul Stevie Aoki, singer Marc Anthony, and tennis star Rafael Nadal rounded out the lineup, turning the event into a cultural crossover that amplified its reach via social media buzz.
Spectators lined the shores of Victoria Island and Ozumba Mbadiwe Road to witness the showboating.
It was also gathered that the championship was sponsored by Lagos State Government, FirstBank, and Afreximbank.
Tinubu speaks on the E1 Electric powerboat championship
President Bola Tinubu has also commended the Lagos State government under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for hosting Africa’s inaugural E1 Electric Powerboat Championship.
The event, dubbed the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, kicked off on October 4 at the Lagos Boat Club in Ikoyi, drawing international pilots, eco-enthusiasts, and dignitaries to the waterways of Victoria Island lagoon.
Tinubu described the championship as more than a high-octane spectacle—it’s a bold “statement of intent” for Nigeria’s leadership in the global shift toward sustainable prosperity.
The President praised Sanwo-Olu and his team for what he described as their visionary efforts in securing the event, positioning the city alongside elite hosts like Monaco, London, Jeddah, and Venice.
“This championship is not merely a thrilling spectacle on water but a statement of intent.
“The E1 Powerboat series combines world-class entertainment with clean energy innovation, showcasing electric-power vessels that point the way to a greener and more sustainable future,” Tinubu said.
The President linked the event to his administration’s vision for the blue economy, noting that the government is committed to building prosperity around renewable energy, marine tourism, and coastal infrastructure.
“By investing in our coastal infrastructure, marine tourism, and renewable energy, we create jobs, open new opportunities for youth, and strengthen Nigeria’s place in the global community.
Lagos, the cultural capital of Nigeria, the heartbeat of our economy, and a symbol of our resilience, is the perfect host. Its vibrant waterways and dynamic people embody the spirit of competition, creativity, and hospitality.
“I commend Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, his team, and all partners, particularly the E1 and sponsors of this event, for the vision and hard work that made this possible,” Tinubu added
