Nigeria has once again been gripped by shock following a deadly attack on Kebbi School between Sunday and Monday.

It was gathered that the attack happened after some armed bandits stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, on Monday.

The deadly attack on the Kebbi School resulted in the tragic death of the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Yakubu Makuku, and the kidnapping of 25 female students.

According to eye witness reports, the girls were whisked away during an attack by the gunmen on Sunday night at the school located in the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of the state.

Witnesses said the bandits operated without resistance and caused widespread panic, throwing the entire region into deep fear and mourning.

The vice principal was said to have been shot while attempting to protect the students during the attack.

The Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, has also confirmed the attack on the Kebbi School, adding that 25 students were abducted.

Abubakar disclosed that a combined team of additional police tactical units, military personnel, and vigilantes had been deployed in the area.

The statement partly read, “On November 17, 2025, at about 0400hrs, information received revealed that a gang of armed bandits with sophisticated weapons, shooting sporadically, stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, Danko district, Danko/Wasagu LGA of Kebbi State.

“The police tactical units deployed in the school engaged them in a gun duel.

“Unfortunately, the suspected bandits had already scaled through the fence of the school and abducted 25 students from their hostel to an unknown destination.”

Also, the Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi state governor, Ahmed Idris, disclosed that the Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Tafida, had been dispatched to the school to assess the situation on behalf of Governor Nasir Idris, who is currently out of the state.

“The deputy governor is on his way to know the exact situation. The governor is not in the state for now, but his deputy will go on his behalf until he returns at any moment from now,” Idris said.

Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that this is the latest of several attacks and abductions by bandits, especially in the northern part of the country.

In February 2021, bandits kidnapped 317 schoolgirls from the Government Girls Science Secondary School Jangebe in Jangebe, Zamfara State.

The incident happened at the all-female school located in the Talata-Mafara Local Government Area of the state.

In December 2020, bandits took three hundred and three students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina, into captivity.

In 2018, 110 students were kidnapped after Boko Haram invaded the Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) in Dapchi on February 19, 2018.

There was global outrage when Boko Haram attacked the Girls Secondary School in Chibok, a town on the border between Borno and Adamawa states, and abducted about 200 students in April, 2014.

The development also comes after the United States President Donald Trump redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over the alleged persecution of Christians.

Trump had also threatened military action in Nigeria if the government failed to eliminate the terrorists in the country.

Meanwhile, reactions have begun to troop in following the attack on the Kebbi School.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the tragic attack.

Reacting in a post on his official X handle on Monday, Atiku said he was devastated by the news, describing the incident as another grim reminder of the worsening insecurity in Nigeria.

The post reads: “I am devastated by the news of the tragic attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, which claimed the life of the Vice-Principal and led to the abduction of innocent students.

“This is yet another reminder of the worsening insecurity in our nation.

“I equally condemn the killing of an APC chieftain, Umar Moriki, and the mass abductions in Tsafe LGA of Zamfara, where entire families, including women and children, were taken by bandits. These acts of barbarity have no place in a civilized society.

“Similar tragedies continue to unfold in Plateau, Benue, and other states, where communities are being torn apart by violence. In Shanono LGA of Kano, residents are fleeing their homes in fear, highlighting a national security challenge that has reached intolerable levels.

“Nigeria cannot continue on this path. I call on the Federal Government to urgently review and strengthen its security architecture, deploy adequate personnel across vulnerable communities, and intensify intelligence-led operations. Our citizens deserve protection, dignity, and peace, nothing less.”

Similarly, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, on Monday condemned the deadly attack on the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State.

In a statement signed by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, Enderline Chukwu, the minister called on security forces to work together to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The statement reads in part: “The government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that the state’s security apparatus swing into immediate action to ensure the abducted students are released unharmed.

“Residents should remain calm and go about their business while government and security agencies address the situation.

“I pray to Allah to grant him mercy, a peaceful resting place, and to console his family and loved ones over this painful and unjust loss.”
