The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has confirmed the arrest of Kayode Adeniyi, the driver of former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua on Thursday, January 1, 2026.
The arrest of Joshua’s driver was confirmed in a press statement issued on Thursday by Oluseyi Babaseyi, the police public relations officer (PPRO) of the Ogun State Command.
Babaseyi said the driver of the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his team is currently being held as investigations continue.
“The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing,” Babaseyi said in a post on X.
Pan-Atlantic Kompass reports that the arrest of Joshua’s driver comes after a crash occurred on Monday when the Lexus SUV reportedly rammed into a stationary truck along the busy expressway.
Two members of Joshua’s team, Kevin Latif Ayodele, his personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach, died as a result of the accident.
Joshua survived the crash and was admitted for treatment. He was later discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos, late Wednesday night, after doctors confirmed that he was clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in a statement released after the accident said the crash involved five adult males, with two fatalities recorded, one person injured, and two others escaping unhurt.
According to the FRSC, preliminary findings indicate that the crash was caused by excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, which the agency described as among the leading causes of fatal road accidents on Nigerian highways.
The FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, in a statement, said: “Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck well packed by the side of the road. The primary causes of the crash, being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways.”
Recall also that Joshua’s driver had been interrogated by the police after he was discharged from the hospital.
The driver has also given his statement, and he could be prosecuted for reckless driving.
This was made known by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.
“Anthony Joshua’s driver has been discharged from the hospital, and he is currently giving his statement,” the spokesperson of the Nigerian Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin revealed.
