As Nigerians join the global community to celebrate May Day 2025, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the federal government to raise the retirement age for all civil servants to 65 years or 40 years of service.
The labour union advocated that it is essential that the retirement age enjoyed by selected civil servants be extended to all workers.
The National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, made this demand during the May Day 2025 celebration in Eagle Square, Abuja.
Ajaero, in his address during the May Day 2025 event said although the new retirement age was signed into law by the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, not all civil servants are benefitting.
He emphasised that equal treatment across all categories of civil servants would promote fairness, boost morale, and enhance efficiency in the public sector.
Ajaero said: “It is imperative to extend the revised retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service currently enjoyed by teachers, health professionals, and judges to all public servants.”
Ajaero, in his May Day 2025 speech, also regretted that workers face what he described as daunting challenges in Nigeria that have threatened their existence.
He decried the “alarming state of insecurity, the unchecked impunity in governance, and the blatant disregard for constitutional and democratic principles have cast a dark shadow over the nation.”
He added: “When they fail to do so, democracy is weakened, institutions become compromised, and crisis looms.”
