Reigning champions Argentina pulled off a late comeback to defeat Egypt 3–2 in a World Cup Round of 16 classic at Atlanta Stadium.

Staring down a shock elimination while trailing 2–0 well into the second half, Lionel Scaloni’s men scored three goals in the final 12 minutes of regular time to punch their ticket to the quarterfinals.

Egypt entered the match as heavy underdogs but played with zero fear. Under fifteen minutes into the first half, Marwan Attia swung in a precise corner that found defender Yasser Ibrahim, who bulleted a header past Emiliano Martínez to give the Egypt a 1–0 lead over Argentina.

Just five minutes later, Argentina looked destined to level when a penalty was awarded. Captain Lionel Messi stepped up, but Egypt’s young goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir guessed correctly, diving low to his right to deny the legendary number 10.

Shobeir stood like a wall for the remainder of the half, denying Alexis Mac Allister and Julián Álvarez to protect Egypt’s slim advantage going into the break.

Argentina increased their press in the second half, but the tactical discipline of Hossam Hassan’s squad paid dividends on the counter. In the 67th minute, Mostafa Ziko broke free and clinically finished past Martínez, expanding Egypt’s lead to a stunning 2–0 and placing the reigning title holders on the brink of a historic elimination.

Refusing to surrender, Lionel Scaloni threw numbers forward. The comeback began in the 79th minute when defender Cristian Romero rose above the Egyptian backline to guide a ferocious header into the back of the net.

With the momentum firmly in La Albiceleste’s favor, Lionel Messi found his redemption just four minutes later. Cutting inside, Messi slotted home his 8th goal of the 2026 tournament, drawing level in the Golden Boot race and tying the match at 2–2.

As the match ticked into stoppage time and extra time loomed, Argentina found their definitive moment. In the 93rd minute, midfielder Enzo Fernández latched onto a loose ball inside the penalty area and fired a rocket past Shobeir to seal a stunning 3–2 victory, triggering wild celebrations at Atlanta Stadium.
