A recent report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) reveals a significant shift in global higher education trends, with international students increasingly opting for study destinations beyond the traditional favorites of the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

According to the report, which analyzed data from over 100 countries, the top 10 study destinations outside of the US, UK, Canada, and Australia in 2025 are:

1. Germany

With over 400,000 international students, Germany has solidified its position as a top destination for higher education. The country’s low or no tuition fees at public universities, combined with its strong emphasis on research and innovation, make it an attractive choice for students worldwide.

    2. Netherlands

    The Netherlands welcomes over 120,000 international students each year, with institutions like Delft University of Technology and the University of Amsterdam offering world-class education in a multicultural society.

    3. Sweden

    Sweden’s emphasis on sustainability and innovation in education has made it a hotspot for international students, with over 80,000 students enrolled in its universities.

    4. France

    With over 300,000 international students, France is a popular destination for those seeking a rich academic experience and cultural exposure. Top institutions like Sorbonne University offer a unique blend of academics and vibrant culture.

    5. Ireland

    Ireland’s friendly atmosphere, stunning landscapes, and strong ties to global companies make it an attractive destination for international students. Over 20,000 students from around the world are currently enrolled in Irish universities.

    6. New Zealand

    With its academic excellence, stunning landscapes, and safe learning environment, New Zealand is becoming increasingly popular among international students. Over 30,000 students are currently enrolled in New Zealand’s universities.

    7. Japan

    Japan’s unique culture, cutting-edge technology, and world-class universities make it an attractive destination for international students. Over 190,000 students are currently enrolled in Japanese universities.

    8. Switzerland
