Chelsea has sacked Liam Rosenior after five straight Premier League (PL) defeats and a barren spell in front of goal.
The decision, confirmed by the club on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, brings an abrupt end to the manager’s tenure after just four months in charge at Stamford Bridge.
The final straw for the club hierarchy came following a dismal 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday night.
This result marked the Blues’ fifth consecutive Premier League loss without finding the back of the net.
The results are also the first time in 114 years that the club has endured such a goal-scoring drought in league football, leaving the side seventh in the standings and effectively out of the race for Champions League qualification.
In the statement issued on Wednesday, Chelsea also confirmed that Calum McFarlane has been appointed interim head coach until the end of the season
McFarlane will lead the team into Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final with Leeds at Wembley.
The statement reads: “Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior.
“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, we would like to place on record our gratitude to Liam and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club.
“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season.
“This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightlyr recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.
“Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach until the end of the season with support from existing Club backroom staff, as we strive to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.
“As the Club works to bring stability to the Head Coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.”
Who is Calum McFarlane?
Calum McFarlane is Chelsea’s interim head coach – for the second time in four months.
McFarlane was working with Chelsea’s youth team when he stepped in to look after the senior squad when Enzo Maresca left in January.
He led Chelsea to a last-gasp draw at Man City and a 2-1 defeat at Fulham, in a match which saw Marc Cucurella sent off in the first half.
Rosenior kept McFarlane as part of the first-team coaching staff.
