Harry Kane has finally ended his long-standing trophy drought as Bayern Munich clinched their 34th Bundesliga title, a record-extending achievement in German football.
Kane’s trophy drought ended without Bayern Munich kicking a ball, as rivals Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw against Freiburg, leaving Bayern with an unassailable lead with just two games remaining in the season.
Kane, who joined Bayern Munich from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023, had faced years of near-misses, including losses in the 2019 Champions League final, Euro 2020, and Euro 2024 with England.
Despite his prolific goal-scoring record, the elusive first major trophy had evaded him until this moment.
The 31-year-old striker’s move to Bayern was seen as a near-guarantee for silverware, given the club’s decade-long dominance in the Bundesliga.
However, last season’s trophyless campaign, where Bayer Leverkusen won the Bundesliga title, ending Bayern’s 11-year title streak, fueled narratives of a “Kane curse.”
Kane has now silenced the doubters, contributing 24 goals and seven assists in 29 Bundesliga appearances, positioning him to potentially win the Golden Boot for a second consecutive season.
The title-clinching moment was bittersweet for Kane, who was suspended for Bayern’s dramatic 3-3 draw against RB Leipzig on Saturday, May 3, due to accumulated yellow cards.
Despite being poised to celebrate pitchside, a 94th-minute equalizer by Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen delayed the celebrations.
Fortunately, Leverkusen’s draw the following day sealed Bayern’s triumph, ensuring Kane’s first taste of silverware.
Vincent Kompany, in his first season as Bayern’s manager, has restored the club’s supremacy by winning the 2024-25 Bundesliga title.
Kompany, who faced relegation with Burnley in the Premier League last year, now joins Kane in celebrating a career-first major trophy as a manager.
